Concert-hall atmosphere in the high-end Coupe

The upgraded Harman Kardon® sound system in the new generation of the Mercedes-Benz® CLS four-door luxury Coupe provides a richer, more detailed and fuller listening experience than ever before – from stereo and 5.1¹ recordings in every seat. Harman Kardon acoustic specialists have fitted the top-of-the-range model with a 510-watt high-end sound system. The DSP multichannel main amplifier is supported by a separate 2 × 80-watt booster, mounted directly under the central subwoofer in the rear shelf. In comparison with the previous model, which had a total output of 420 watts, the new system offers an increase of more than 20 percent.

Carefully tuned high-tech components

Twelve high-performance, carefully tuned transducers are installed in the four-door CLS, seven of them metal-matrix speakers. The basis for the faithful, three-dimensional surround sound is the innovative, discrete Harman Kardon Logic 7 technology. This allows stereo and 5.1¹ surround recordings to reach their full potential in the car. The surround information is read from the sound carrier and is optimally distributed over the CLS system architecture, just as intended in the original master. The sound source is moved away from the individual speakers, giving passengers the impression of being in a much larger space with a wider soundstage, whichever seat they are sitting in.

Another decisive element of the superior sound reproduction in the four-door Mercedes-Benz Coupe is the digital DTCP encryption technology¹. Digital Transmission Content Protection (DTCP) means that all high-resolution sound formats can be transmitted en route from the sound carrier to the amplifier. In other words, the technology does away with the need to convert digital into analog signals. This means that sound recordings in DVD-Audio, DVD-Video or DTS® formats in the MLP, MLP 5.1, DTS 5.1, Dolby® Digital 5.1 and PCM digital standards can be transmitted without loss in quality.¹
